Understanding the "Struggle"
 of the Strugging Reader

Do you or your children often say, "I don't like to read?"  Don't despair.  There are tried and true strategies which can help.  With each year comes added content and pressure.  Unfortunately, each year you wait, research shows it is harder to catch up.

TIP:
Did you know PowerPoint has a built in file converter.  Ex.  You find a photo in a document or file format you can't use.  Copy and paste it to a blank PowerPoint slide.  Use the Save As feature and select the file type you prefer.
Reading is a component of five basics - often referred to as the Fab 5.  They are:
1.  Phonological Awareness - the oral language of the letters and letter blends.  
2.  Phonics - the understanding of basic letter blends in text.  Examples are ch, sh, ai, oy, and au.  
3.  Fluency - this has been strangely over emphasized to mean speed only.  It is true that the pace of the read if important; however, it is also the intonation that also supports comprehension.
4.  Vocabulary - because struggling readers don't read as many words as better readers, they fall into a deficit quickly here.
5.  Comprehension
 - All of the above come together here, right?  Not always.  A student can be proficient in many of the above areas and still struggle.  Having nearly a decade of experience as a reading coach and middle and high school teacher, I have discovered the road blocks that can ensure here.
